Since spring is here and summer’s on it’s way it gets more challenging to sit in front of a computer each day and do the tasks necessary to set up a successful home based business. In the case of on line marketing, e.g., creating content and building back-links gets not so attractive as soon as the out-of-doors beckons.
However these are the times when it’s particularly crucial to keep your agreements with yourself. The longer you let things slide the harder it is to start again and the longer it’s going to be before you get results that will help to inspire you further. And, in the meantime, there is the boost in energy that comes from keeping your agreements, especially when it took some effort to do so.
When looking for a more productive environment one tactic that is effective for me is to head to my favourite cafe, treat myself to a cappuccino and write there. At the very least I get to enjoy the fresh air as I am walking. Of all the “tips” I have for developing a writing habit this one is my favourite. I find it very challenging to write in the home, whatever the season. It is always the same with any job I am resisting. There are simply too many things to distract me – too many excuses. However going to an environment I enjoy being in works really well. It’s a big help to my internal motivation.
I find that even when I am really struggling to write I’ll often produce something when I am in the cafe. Even if it’s not particularly high-quality. I also enjoy writing content in the municipal library (reminds me of contented university years) and on a bench on the prom overlooking the seashore.
A productive location is a necessary factor relative to motivation so I recommend playing with what works/doesn’t work out for you. It is not just about physical space either. I find I can not write, for example, if there are songs to be heard in the background. Orchestral music I can deal with but anything with words I can hear and I just can not concentrate.
Now and then I find having a lit candle on my writing desk helps me to get on with work I have been pushing aside. No idea why. There’s simply something I find uplifting about it.
So, I recommend you experiment with different places and environmental conditions and develop a variety of situations that help you be more motivated to do those jobs you’ve been procrastinating about.
