Staff behaving badly: advice for employers as the party season approaches
Every December employees anticipate the traditional work Christmas party, which is a wonderful way for a business to commemorate its wins for the year and to make employees feel valued, allowing them to relax, get to know each other and share the joys of the season. However all this enjoyment can offer the perfect environment for sexual harassment and workplace accidents to occur. The combination of a social setting, a relaxed, party atmosphere and alcohol can create high spirits - which can quickly erode inhibitions and commonsense. Every year the various anti-discrimination tribunals receive complaints of sexual harassment at work Christmas parties and these can lead to costly claims for the employer. Whether it be a stolen kiss underneath the mistletoe, an overly enthusiastic dance partner, unwelcome or uninvited sexual advances, or a comment on someone’s appearance, sexual harassment claims are often common after Christmas parties. Christmas is not called the ‘silly season’ for nothing – staff with too much alcohol in their system loosen up, and foolish pranks can often results in accidents occurring. Dancing on desks or similar activities are likely to cause damage to property and injure people; and in some instances amount to misuse of company property.
Controlling pest birds in the food processing industry
Pest birds can be a serious environmental management and occupational health and safety issue if they are not controlled. In food processing plants they can be the cause of serious damage, health issues and safety problems to employees. Pest birds such as pigeons, starlings and sparrows are very common in and around commercial facilities. These facilities often provide perfect roosting places, shelter for nesting and a wonderful food source. Pest bird feces is acidic and can be quite corrosive to building material and machinery, it can also carry any of 60 known transmittable diseases. Contamination of bird feces, feathers and debris is problematic in the food processing industry. Health officials can close plants for days to weeks when contamination is found.
Once it is determined that there is an issue with pest birds, plant managers must survey the area to determine what the pest birds are up to. In order to implement an effective pest bird control program you must know if the birds are roosting, nesting and if they have a good source of food, water and shelter. Once you know what the birds are doing and where they are, an effective bird control system can be implemented.
